After Beating Cancer, Man Cancels His Funeral And Books His Wedding In The Same Church

After battling lymphoma, John McCabe received the bad news: He only had eight weeks to live. Like many who are facing their own mortality, he decided to do something to help his loved ones after he passed. But God had other plans.

The father of three wanted to lessen the pain on his kids and girlfriend Lisa Williams, so he decided to plan his own funeral, down to the last detail. He booked a church for late January 2014, and he arranged the food and music. “Planning my funeral seemed like a way of easing the strain for them, as it would be one less ordeal for them to deal with,” he told the Daily Mail. He even penned a letter saying goodbye to his children. He wrote:

“I don’t want to leave you or mammy, but I haven’t got an option. I will be watching over you always. I want you to be happy because that makes me happy. Now turn that frown upside down and be big and brave for Daddy.”

Miraculously, McCabe beat his terminal diagnosis after a bone marrow transplant and was given the all-clear from his doctors. He then canceled his funeral, but re-booked the same church to marry Williams, the mother of his children and girlfriend for 12 years. “A year ago I was planning my funeral at that church, and now I’m planning our wedding there,” he says.

They’re now set to wed on July 25, 2015. “When Lisa walks down the aisle with our children…I’ll be fighting back tears, because we could have been in that church under very different circumstances,” says McCabe. As for Williams, she couldn’t be happier at the extraordinary turn of events. “It’s been a real roller coaster ride, but I’m thrilled to finally be married to the man of my dreams.”

It’s not often that someone beats cancer in such a miraculous way. Congratulations to Lisa and John on their upcoming wedding.
