In a recent interview with Vulture, an online publication that describes itself as “devouring culture,” Eminem caused shockwaves with an admission that, if true, would truly rock the boat. No one seems to know if he was being serious or whether he was being sarcastic or joking. But if what he said was meant sincerely, it may mean that the rapper known for misogyny, rude lyrics, and crude references and language, could be bisexual, or perhaps even gay.
Here’s an excerpt from the curious interview:
Interviewer: Do you date?
Eminem: It’s tough. Since my divorce I’ve had a few dates and nothing’s panned out in a way that I wanted to make it public. Dating’s just not where I’m at lately.
Interviewer: When you were dating, how’d you meet people? Tinder?
Eminem: I mean, yeah.
Interviewer: Are you being serious?
Eminem: Yeah, Tinder.
Interviewer: Really?
Eminem: [Laughs] And Grindr. I also used to go to strip clubs.
Interviewer: I think a lot of long-term relationships start in strip clubs.
Eminem: What can I say? Going to strip clubs is how I was meeting some chicks. It was an interesting time for me.
Interviewer: Is fame lonely for you?
Eminem: Am I lonely? No, I’m good. Thanks for asking though.

When Mathers mentioned Grindr, a notorious hook up app for homosexuals, the interviewer seemingly missed a golden opportunity to pursue that line of questioning. Perhaps the intent was to avoid making Mathers uncomfortable, or to protect his image, or simply that the possibility of Eminem being bisexual was dismissed as being of no importance.
Whatever the case, people are talking about that lost opportunity and wishing the reporter had asked about it. Mathers, though profane, hardcore, and a hater of President Trump, is actually a very intelligent person. What he produces may not seem all that intelligent, especially when he seems to be unable to speak without uttering the eff word in every sentence. But his mental processes are actually pretty sharp. It’s too bad he’s turned that brain power into a weapon against living a life exemplified by goodness and civility. And he’s also used it against our duly and democratically elected President, which is not contributing to unity, peace or progress for the American people. Mathers is a star, a legend, a person to whom countless people listen every day. He has an opportunity here, to speak up for working with the President to achieve beneficial results for all Americans. But instead, he uses his platform to spew hatred of Trump, and of Trump’s supporters. He further divides us instead of bringing us together.
Well, to whom much is given, much is required, Mr. Mathers. With blessing comes the responsibility to bless others. And that is not what you are engaged in. So, no matter whether you really use Grindr, or whether you don’t, what you are definitely doing is infusing our culture with negativity and hate. And quite frankly we don’t need any more of that. Here’s an idea, how about you put out an album celebrating what we have in common and bringing people together to accomplish good?
So Eminem, the king of homophobic slurs, just casually (and, seemingly, seriously) drops that he’s used Grindr in this Vulture Q&A and the interviewer doesn’t ask him about it at all. In an interview that’s supposed to be about his growth, no less. https://t.co/ai6uWJBzuy
