Great eye-dea! Dad Draws Different Cartoon Characters on Daughter’s Eye-Patch Daily To Make Her Recovery From Cataract Fun

Wearing an eye patch is no fun for anyone, let alone a child who might not understand the importance of complying with a doctor’s orders. But one British dad is doing everything he can to make it easier.

Geof Grubb’s 18-month-old daughter Layla was born with a cataract in her right eye and has to wear a patch over her left one to strengthen the poor eye.

Little Layla must put a patch on for two hours a day until she’s four to and it is hoped it will stop her from needing to have surgery.

Geof, who lives in Illinois, draws a new patch every day and has gathered hundreds of followers online but says he isn’t worried about running out
of ideas.

‘We bought her some plain patches and I thought they were a little depressing. This was my way of making it fun,’ he said.

‘Layla doesn’t really see them much because she’s wearing them. She’s happiest when she gets to take it off. I really like the Calvin and Hobbes patch personally because it reminds me of my childhood.’

His designs, which have included Yoda, characters from The Simpsons and Star Wars, each take between 10 and 20 minutes to draw.

‘I have a running list of ideas that my wife and family helps me with. Sometimes I think I’m out of ideas but I always find inspiration somewhere. There’s a ton of pop culture out there.’

The stay at home dad has managed to post 105 images on Instagram and gathered over 1,600 followers.

Layla was born with the cataract which does not need to be removed as her vision is expected to develop normally, using the patches instead.

What a lucky girl, with a dad who will go to such lengths!
