Mexican Senator Proposes Taking Back Land From The US If Trump Becomes President

Armando Rios Piter, a Mexican Senator from the center-left Democratic Revolution Party, is proposing a bill that would allow Mexico to break the treaties it made with the United States. This, if Trump tries to make Mexico pay for our southern border wall, which was a major part of his appeal early in his campaign.

“In cases where the property/assets of (our) fellow citizens or companies are affected by a foreign government, as Donald Trump has threatened, the Mexican government should proportionally expropriate assets and properties of foreigners from that country on our territory,” says his proposal.

The land in question was handed over to the United States in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which would later become most of the southwest states.

This rhetoric comes after Trump’s pleasant meeting with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto. When asked about the contentious wall topic, Trump said that it had not been discussed during the meeting. President Nieto, however, later Tweeted that he had told Trump that Mexico would not be paying for the wall.

But Nieto himself recognized the need for the United States to protects its borders during their press conference, so we have no way of knowing if he actually backs this legislation at this time.

One thing is for sure though and that is if Trump becomes President, our relationship with Mexico is going to be seriously strained, maybe even to the point where it might result in some sort of armed conflict. That is certainly the case if Mexico makes a move onto American soil with the intent of taking it by force.

It will be interesting to see how many of Mexico’s politicians support this bill, and if it is passed, or vetoed by the President.

Sen. Rios Piter said that the concept of making Mexico pay for the border wall is “putting at risk” the friendship between the two countries. He also added that Trump’s stance on NAFTA was a bit extreme as well, commenting that it would hurt the economic welfare of Mexico and the United States.

I absolutely do NOT think that it would be a good idea for Mexico to step foot into the United States, militarily speaking, and trying to take back land that they gave us. With tensions as high as they are in our country right now, people are just looking for a reason to fight and this could become a larger issue than they expect.
