“He hesitated simply because of what’s going on in society right now,” explained Sgt. Heath Boackle of the Birmingham Police Department.
Since the outbreak of civil unrest in cities like Ferguson, Missouri, and Baltimore, police officers around the country have become more hesitant to do their jobs and protect the public for fear of media backlash.
“We have officers walking on eggshells because of how they’re scrutinized in the media,” Boackle explained.
