For many families, a brand-new puppy or kitty is the right fit. However, I recommend first perusing the animal shelters in your area. Many animals are kind and deeply appreciative of a good home and make wonderful pets. One family saved a young pup from euthanasia and when he realized he had a new family, he went berserk with joy! Thankfully, the moment was captured on video for the whole world to see. Check it out:

A shy shelter dog turned into a jumping, tail-wagging bundle of joy when he was adopted by a loving family.
Benny, an 8-month-old pit bull, was one of the dogs at the high-kill Carson Animal Care Shelter in Los Angeles. On Dec. 10, the little pup got the surprise of a lifetime when he found his forever home.
His response was all sorts of precious.

I have personally adopted from animal shelters and while there are some poor, damaged animals there, the majority are friendly and deeply appreciative of a loving home. Having seen what else is out there, they often have a sense of gratitude and loyalty that exceeds that of even the most loyal store-bought dog or cat.
It’s a rewarding experience and I urge anyone considering a new pet to check them out- especially if the shelters in your area are “kill” shelters that euthanize unwanted pets after a period.
