The President Riding The Paper Tiger

One of the reasons so many foreigners wanted Barack Obama to become President is that they think he’s a small, weak pansy who cares more about making bureaucrats in Europe like him than he does about looking out for his own country. Incidentally, they have Obama’s number.

Joe Biden certainly understands that’s true. It’s why he famously predicted that Obama would be tested,

“It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking. We’re about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America. Remember I said it standing here if you don’t remember anything else I said. Watch, we’re gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy.”

“I can give you at least four or five scenarios from where it might originate,” Biden said to Emerald City supporters, mentioning the Middle East and Russia as possibilities. “And he’s gonna need help. And the kind of help he’s gonna need is, he’s gonna need you – not financially to help him – we’re gonna need you to use your influence, your influence within the community, to stand with him. Because it’s not gonna be apparent initially, it’s not gonna be apparent that we’re right.”

So here we have a man who’s perceived as a weakling — a man even his own Vice-President predicts will be tested by people who think he’s too soft to confront America’s enemies — and the first thing he does right out of the gate is to coddle Al-Qaeda,

According to White House reports, he is preparing to sign an executive order today to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center within a year and halt military trials of terror suspects held there.

An estimated 245 men are being held at the U.S. naval base in Cuba. Most have been detained for years without being charged with a crime. The administration has received permission to suspend the trials at Guantanamo for 120 days pending a review of the military tribunals.

What signal does it send to the rest of the world when one of Obama’s highest priorities is giving terrorists we’ve captured a helping hand? What signal does it send to Al-Qaeda and our other enemies around the world? It says something about like this,

“You know you thought America was a paper tiger before 9/11? Well, now that Bush is out of office, that’s exactly what we are. You can kill Americans, kill our friends, do whatever you want, and we’ll just wag our fingers or issue a meaningless UN resolution just like the countries in Western Europe. America under Obama is decadent, weak, and cares more about being liked than even punishing the very people who killed 3,000 Americans. Do anything you like, anywhere you like, to anyone we like — including us — and we’ll just take it.”

Even if Obama was staying up at night, crying into his pillow about how those poor Al-Qaeda terrorists were stuck in prison for years just because they wanted to kill Americans, he should have at least waited a while before making a move. It would have still been a bad idea any time he did it, but doing it right off the bat sends the worst possible message to people who want to do us harm at the worst possible time.

Update #1: John Murtha has suggested that we close Gitmo and send some of the prisoners to his district in Pennsylvania.

A top House Democrat who is a leading critic of the Iraq war says he would have no qualms about transferring Guantanamo detainees to a prison in his Pennsylvania district.

Suspected terrorists at the military’s detention center in Cuba are “no more dangerous in my district than in Guantanamo,” Rep. John Murtha told Fox News on Wednesday.

Personally, I think it’s a wonderful idea to close Gitmo and send the terrorists there to “his district,” if by “his district,” he means his house.
