There’s talent … and then there’s amazing talent. Surfer Kelly Slater was competing in the third heat of Round 5 at the Hurley Pro at Lowers Trestles, when he lost control of his surfboard. But instead of spiraling out of control and maybe leaving the competition, he surprised everyone.
Surfing Magazine reports,
We use the word something because what the hell do you call this? It was a backside air reverse gone awry — Slater’s board got away from him and then he somehow wrangled it back under his belly and popped back up. It was weird. Too weird for the judges, in fact, because it was only scored a 4.17. Then Mick won the heat and Kelly said he might not compete in Europe and now we’re all really confused.
