Haley’s Warning Comes To Pass! Trump Negotiates Massive Cut To U.N. Budget

The United Nations recently voted to condemn President Trump’s decision to formally recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel by moving our embassy there. Given the UN’s history of anti-Semitic behavior and anti-Israel opinions, it’s not at all surprising that they would have an issue with this.

However, the United States wasn’t about to allow the council of pompous nobodies to tell us what we can and can’t do with our embassies, and our Ambassador to the UN made it clear that we will remember this discretion against us. In fact, Nikki Haley said that she would not allow the generosity of the American people to be taken advantage of and now the Trump administration is working to make that a reality.

Days after Haley delivered her warning, we are now seeing the federal government of the United States (which pays 1/5th of the entire UN budget) slash nearly $285M from the $1.2B we spend with them.

The US had looked into increasing the efficiency of the UN at the same time “while protecting our interests” according to the Washington Post.

The UN General assembly voted 128-9 to condemn our actions (as if we cared) and Haley made it clear that this vote has absolutely no bearing on where we put our embassies.

Trump issued a follow-up blow by stating that our country could “save a lot” by ending foreign aid to countries which “take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars” from our budget.

This new budget “reduced the UN’s bloated management and support functions, bolstered support for key U.S. priorities throughout the world, and instilled more discipline and accountability throughout the U.N system,” reads a statement from Nikki Haley’s office.

When cuts were announced in June, Haley promised that they were only the beginning and it looks like this vote solidified that decision. Perhaps the UN should reconsider bullying a country that accounts for a large part of it financial stability? That’s like a child saying “Mom, Dad, I don’t like that you bought a new car. I veto that decision,” and then is surprised when their allowance is cut as a result of their arrogance. We are part of the UN as a favor to them, not because we rely on them for our protection like some smaller, more poorly-defended countries.

It’s nice to hear that we have a President who is actually going to draw a line in the sand and stick to it.
