A Union Even I Could Support: Huffpo-Aol News

It goes without saying that I’m not a fan of unions, but there’s at least one group of people in America I’d genuinely like to see unionize.

The new Arianna Huffington-run AOL news operation has fired scores of AOL business and finance freelancers, and is offering them the opportunity to work again—for free, according to reports from contributors. The popular liberal’s controversial labor practices are triggering another uproar over AOL’s multi-million-dollar acquisition of the Huffington Post, and have spurred new calls by journalists and union leaders for an “electronic” strike at the developing mega news site. Some of the canned freelancers are being offered staff jobs in the new operation, which is being run by Huffington, though numbers have not been revealed. All others have been told they can continue to write for free, reports the Business Insider.

The Huffington Post has come under intense fire from its own freelancers, who have never been paid by the site, complaining that they helped create the operation that Huffington sold to AOL for $315 million.

Liberals scream about Wisconsin and demonize Wal-Mart, but $315 million dollars changed hands and most of the people who actually did the writing that brought people to the website got nothing for it. If liberals think unions are so great, why don’t they speak about how important it is to unionize the Huffington Post?
