Failure of the American Liberal Left

David Brog, executive director of Christians United for Israel (CUFI), recently published an: essay: in the: Middle East Quarterly: discussing “the failure of the: American Jewish liberal left” to maintain liberal support for Israel.

Brog notes that support for Israel among the liberal base of the Democratic Party has been steadily declining for well over a decade.: Brog finds the solution to this trend in Republican history. He notes that when Israel’s conservative supporters once faced establishment discomfort with Israel, “pro-Israel conservatives blamed neither Israel nor Israel’s liberal supporters. Instead, they began the hard work of making the case for Israel on the merits.” He calls upon his liberal colleagues to “go and do likewise” and make the progressive case for Israel.

Many recent observers have bemoaned the fact that Israel is becoming a partisan issue in American politics, and they have tended to blame conservatives for it. Brog makes a powerful argument that the real fault lay with pro-Israel liberals, who have bought into dangerous myths about Israel rather than confront them.

CUFI is one of the most active and important pro-israel organizations in the world. It was founded by John Hagee, and leaders include: Jay Sekulow of the ACLJ, Pat Robertson,: David Cerullo of INSP: and others.
