Radical Islam vs. Free Speech

I’ve written dozens of articles and broadcast many podcasts on the topic of Islam. For those who have read and listened to mine and others, you can be sure you are far better informed on the subject than virtually all other non-Muslims throughout the world.
We’ve learned about the Five Pillars of Islam, the prophet Muhammad, Sharia, the Caliphate, the Mahdi (the Twelfth Imam) and jihad. We understand by listening to well-known Islamists such as Anjem Choudary that Muhammad had prophesized that Islam “will one day dominate the whole world, such as that Allah (SWT) showed him the east and the west and the authority of the Ummah (Muslims) was over the whole of it, i.e. over the whole world including the USA, Russia, China, India etc.” We know this is not idle propaganda – they really believe this to be true and are battling everyday to achieve it.
Islamists like Choudary preach that “Muslims must believe in and try to realize through their daw’ah (propagation of Islam) and through the establishment of the Khilafah (the Islamic State) whose foreign policy will be jihad to remove all obstacles in the way of the implementation of Islam (i.e. the sharia) everywhere – that a Muslim must not obey, submit or follow anyone or anything other than Allah in his life. This means that democracy is anathema to Islam…”
Knowing all these things, one can only conclude, by their own words, that Western democracy is utterly incompatible with Islam. Whether they are radical Islamists like ISIS and al-Qaeda, who attempt to conquer by force, or supposedly non-violent groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood and Hizb-ut Tahrir, who seek to conquer the West by way of Civilization Jihad, the end is still the same – the replacement of democracy and republicanism with theocracy.
As I stated, most Americans are not aware of these unfortunate facts, as we are more than the rest of the West, insulated from the violence. Of course we have felt the sting of Islamic jihad, but still, it is not the constant publicized threat with which Europe or Israel must contend.
Yet to Islamists worldwide, we are the ultimate prize. America is the great Satan, whose founding was one of freedom of speech, religion, expression and assembly. These things are directly contradictory to Islamist ideology.
So what if these Islamists become emboldened enough to begin rallies and marches down the streets of our cities as they do in Europe? What if they invoke the same right of free speech and assembly as the rest of America? Should they be denied these rights?
We know radical Islam is continually trying to recruit angry and displaced youth into jihad and there are no more angry and displaced youth than on American college campuses. One needs only to look around at the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movements at Universities to know this is true. BLM is in constant recruiting mode on campus.
So if Black Lives Matter can freely preach their hate and recruit on campus, why shouldn’t a group like ISIS? This is the question Tennessee lawmakers are wrestling with today. Should ISIS “have the right recruit on campus?”
Rep John DeBerry Jr. (D-Memphis) says no. “There are young people who are not ready yet,” he said. “They’re half-baked, half-cooked — who are recruited to work against their own parents, their own nation, and I would be concerned as a parent and as a citizen.”
Republican Rep. Martin Daniel (R-Knoxville) disagrees. He says that like any other group, ISIS should be allowed to recruit on campus. Daniel says that, “So long as it doesn’t disrupt the proceedings on that campus. Yes sir. They can recruit people for any other organization or any other cause. I think it’s just part of being exposed to differing viewpoints.”
I hate this idea, but despite my misgivings and knee-jerk emotional reaction to say no, we are a free society and as such must protect the rights of all Americans – not just the ones we like. We do not want to join democrats on the road to branding speech “hateful,” and outlawing it just because it offends us.
Our job as the ones who are most educated regarding Islamism is to spread the word as best we can about the dangers of being sucked into the fantasy of an all-powerful Caliphate – that those who join and pledge themselves to the Caliph, do so for life. Once you’re in, there is no changing your mind and rejoining secular Western society, as many a young Westerner has discovered.
