Defense Attorney Says Child Rapist Didn’t Understand the Country’s Culture

As more and more refugees flood into Europe, more and more crimes appear to be committed. Sex crimes seem to especially be on the rise and yet, there doesn’t seem to be much that authorities are willing to do about it. One judge wouldn’t accept one rapist’s excuse though and handed down a seriously harsh sentences.

20 year-old Zohair Tomari is an immigrant, although he can’t seem to agree on where he is from. Originally, he claimed to be from Morocco and then changed his story, and said he immigrated from Syria. He made his way to Britain, where he sexually assaulted multiple young girls.

First, Tomari was arrested for sexually and physically assaulting a 17 year-old girl in 2014. He was released from prison on bail, however, and while he was free, he took the opportunity to commit the crime again. This time, his victims were even younger: two girls, aged 13 and 14. He got the girls drunk and then sexually assaulted them as well.

His lawyer surely would have had a difficult time defending his client, but the excuse he came up with was beyond bizarre. According to Jason Pegg, it could all be boiled down to… cultural differences. “He perhaps did not understand the culture of this country,” Pegg claimed. But Judge Andrew Lockhart wasn’t buying it.

“Behavior of this nature is abhorred in virtually every civilized country on this earth,” Lockhart responded. “I am driven to conclude you are dangerous. I can see no end to the danger you pose.” With that, Lockhart sentenced Tomari to 12 years and nine months in prison and also ordered that he be listed as a sex offender for the rest of his life. Not everyone was satisfied with the sentence, though; some argued that it was too lenient. Others complained that Tomari should have been deported back to Syria.

Do you think his sentence was tough enough?
