Gun Lies: Sally Kohn Exaggerates the Heck Out of How Many Kids Are Killed by Guns Each Year

Gee, I’m so surprised that Sally Kohn would lie. Not. She got called on the carpet for grossly exaggerating statistics that had to do with guns killing children. She claimed 10,000 kids a year die from gun-related incidents. Not true… not even close. Thankfully, John Cardillo was paying attention and shoved the actual FBI crime statistics from 2014 in her face. Total homicides were 11,961, of which, only 1,085 were children under the age of 18. That’s TOTAL homicides, not just gun-related ones. He points out she erroneously multiplied the number of gun-related deaths for children by 12. Fact checking must be out of style at CNN. Kohn did a public correction in her article and online. Too little, too late… again.

From TheBlaze:

CNN commentator Sally Kohn published an opinion column on Thursday claiming that guns need to be regulated just like “toys” because 10,000 kids are killed by guns every year.

The number is jarring — but it’s also false.

Shortly after posting her column online, radio host John Cardillo publicly called her out, providing her with FBI crime statistics from 2014.

The numbers show there were a total of 11,961 homicides, but only 1,085 victims under the age of 18. Cardillo also noted many of the homicides involving teens and guns are crime-related.

Kohn was left with no choice but to issue a public correction on Twitter and in her opinion article online.

An editor’s note now appears at the bottom of the column:

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this opinion essay misstated the number of children killed every year by guns. 10,000 children are killed or injured by guns every year, according to American Academy of Pediatrics.

However, the correction came hours after Cardillo pointed out the glaring mistake.

The correction came hours after the lie was caught and with no apology. And of course, Kohn blamed it on someone else at CNN for giving her the statistic. She didn’t bother to check to see if it was true, she just ran with it. There were 8,124 gun-related deaths in the US in 2014 and over 90% of those were adults. Not only that, but Cardillo (a former NYPD officer) pointed out that 95% of gun-related deaths for children are crime related, not accidental. Those crimes are committed by teens with illegal guns. So, tell us Sally… since the numbers no longer fit your article and your narrative, will you pony up and tell the truth? We’re waiting.
