Donald Trump and Paul Ryan have had a somewhat contentious relationship so far. Now that the election is over, the two have to try to work together. At a recent rally in Wisconsin, Trump had some nice words to say about Ryan… and also a promise of things to come.
Trump has been traveling around the country for his “Thank You” tour and stopped in Wisconsin on Tuesday night. The stage was decorated with Christmas trees, along with “Merry Christmas” stamped across the lectern. Wisconsin also happens to be the state that Paul Ryan represents in the House of Representatives. So, Trump decided to say a few words for Ryan.
“[Y]ou know, honestly, he’s like a fine wine. Every day goes by I get to appreciate his genius more and more. Now, if he ever goes against me I’m not going to say that,” Trump joked. “He’s a great guy and we have some amazing things in store.” Trump also talked about some of the things that he plans to work on once he is sworn in as president, like tax reform, Obamacare, and of course, the wall.
“Oh, we’re going to work on the wall, Paul!” Trump said directly to Ryan, as the crowd cheered.
Trump will need Congress to approve his plans to build the wall. He will therefore need Paul Ryan’s backing and support if he has any hope of getting it done at all. Ryan has promised to work with the Trump Administration, so maybe this statement was Trump’s way of showing him that he isn’t going to give up on border security and that Ryan needs to be prepared. Trump’s supporters want that wall built, too.
The only question is, will Ryan and other congressional Republicans cooperate?
