Amateur Hour In The White House: Obama Ticks Off The Brits

One of the things we heard over and over during the 2008 campaign was that we needed a skillful diplomat like Barack Obama in the White House to make up for the damage that “Cowboy” George Bush has done internationally. Then, of course, Barack Obama actually got into office and everyone found out that absolutely no one in the White House had the slightest idea of what they were supposed to be doing about foreign affairs.

The latest flap with the British/French is all too typical.

The United States and Britain have a “special relationship.” When we fight somewhere like Afghanistan or Iraq, we look to the Brits to be there and they show up to bleed and die. Not surprisingly, this is quite controversial in Britain.

On the one hand, having this kind of unique influence with the world’s only Super Power is a source of pride to them. It also has real world implications. Being “Robin” to America’s “Batman” is no small matter. But, it comes with a cost in blood and treasure. It also has political implications. Tony Blair was endlessly derided as “America’s Poodle” for standing by us in Iraq.

But make no mistake about it, Britain’s help was invaluable. No other 10 nations did as much to aid us as Britain. Whatever else you may want to say about George W. Bush, he treated Britain with the respect Britain deserved. That hasn’t been the case since Barack Obama came into office. The Obama Administration has snubbed the Brits a number of times and has treated the Brits like they’re not that important — and it has rubbed the British people raw. They’re not happy about it — and they shouldn’t be.

Savvy diplomats could fix this problem, but of course, an administration that is competent in International Affairs would have never let it develop in the first place. Nor would they have done something as screamingly dumb as this (From the British Daily Mail)

Barack Obama has declared that France is America’s greatest ally, undermining Britain’s Special Relationship with the U.S.

The President risked offending British troops in Afghanistan by saying that French president Nicolas Sarkozy is a ‘stronger friend’ than David Cameron.

The remarks, during a White House appearance with Mr Sarkozy, will reinforce the widely-held view in British diplomatic circles that Mr Obama has less interest in the Special Relationship than any other recent American leader.

Mr Obama said: ‘We don’t have a stronger friend and stronger ally than Nicolas Sarkozy, and the French people.’

The comments follow a pattern of coldness towards the UK. When Gordon Brown was prime minister, Mr Obama snubbed his requests for meetings in the U.S.

He also denounced Britain during his inauguration speech.

The UK has lost nearly 350 troops in the war against the Taliban — seven times as many as France.

Nice job, Commander Moron.

Of course, Barack Obama, being a liberal who has no understanding of what’s going on in the world, probably thought the way most liberals think. “Oh, the French don’t like us all that much; so we just need to pucker up and kiss their French behinds. Then they’ll see we’re nice guys and they’ll love us!”

So, while talking to the congenitally treacherous French, Obama goes overboard in complimenting Sarkozy. In fact, he went so overboard that it came across as yet another backhanded slap at the Brits whose entire “special relationship” with America is founded on the idea that THEY’RE the strongest friend and ally that America has.

This is rank stupidity on the part of an administration that has sold themselves as more culturally sensitive and sophisticated than the Bush Administration. Let me tell you something: George W. Bush killed more brainpower on drinking binges, before he went dry, than Obama has. He’s comically inept and every time you take him off a teleprompter, where he’s no longer reading something written by a team of speech writers, he seems to prove what an ignorant dunce we have in the White House.
