Local Officials Adopt Defiant Stance Regarding Immigration Law

Nonvoting moonbats rioting on the streets of Portland aren’t the only ones who have not dealt constructively with their disappointment over Trump’s election. Some local officials seem intent on provoking a crisis with irresponsible displays of defiance.

Predictably, one the worst of them is NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio:

New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio called for more anti-Donald Trump protests that have tied up traffic and sucked up law enforcement resources in the city. …

The New York mayor previously suggested he would fight Trump on any policy that would punish sanctuary cities, like New York and Los Angeles, and suggested the city’s database of over 850,000 New Yorkers who have a city municipal identification card could be erased on his orders.

Others digging in their heels regarding sanctuary city status, which entails flouting federal laws while accepting federal money, include Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck:

Beck said Monday that he has no plans to change the LAPD’s stance on immigration enforcement, despite President-elect Donald Trump’s pledge to toughen federal immigration laws and deport millions of people upon taking office.

For decades, the LAPD has distanced itself from federal immigration policies. The LAPD prohibits officers from initiating contact with someone solely to determine whether he or she is in the country legally, mandated by a special order signed by then-chief Daryl Gates in 1979. During Beck’s tenure as chief, the department stopped turning over people arrested for low-level crimes to federal agents for deportation and moved away from honoring federal requests to detain inmates who might be deportable past their jail terms.

Beck flatly states that he is “not going to work in conjunction with Homeland Security on deportation efforts.” An estimated 1 million illegal aliens live in Los Angeles County.

Obama’s first Chief of Staff, current Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel barks:

“To be clear about what Chicago is, it always will be a sanctuary city.”

In Taxachusetts,

“Boston is a sanctuary city,” says Boston City Councilor Tito Jackson. …

Mayor [Marty] Walsh appears to be staying the course as well, saying in a statement: “We are a welcoming city for all. These are Boston values and no policy will change them.”

Those worried that Trump’s rhetoric could indicate authoritarian tendencies may find this unlawful defiance alarming. The refusal of local officials to behave responsibly could serve as a pretext for expanded federal power.
