Afghanistan’s Version of “Sesame Street” Muppet Teaches Young Boys How To Respect Girls

First-world ideals like allowing women to go to school and treating them as equals instead of property have finally made it to Afghanistan’s version of ‘Sesame Street.”

The aim to to teach young boys that girls are people too (what a concept) and that they deserve to be treated with respect.

A 6 year-old boy named Zeerak is set to join his sister Zari on the show “Sesame Garden” to promote gender equality.

Now there’s a country that could use feminism.

The head of the broadcasting channel that aired the program, Massood Sanjer, issued a statement on the addition:

“In a male-dominant country like Afghanistan, I think you have to do some lessons for the males to respect the females. So by bringing a male character to the show who respects a female character, you teach the Afghan men that you have to respect your sister the same way as you do your brother.”

It’s never too late to join the rest of the world in treating women like people. At least they’re making an effort to change the way little boys view little girls instead of allowing females to continue being treated as subhuman in their culture. Any step forward is one we should support.

The question is, will it work? Sherrie Westin, Sesame Workshop’s Executive Vice President of Global Impact and Philanthropy, seems to think so.

“Debuting a confident, inquisitive, and sweet Afghan girl character is a perfect opportunity to engage both boys and girls with lessons supporting girls’ empowerment and diversity as we aim to help all children in Afghanistan grow smarter, stronger, and kinder,” she said.

I’m looking forward to seeing the (hopefully positive) impact this has on the children of Afghanistan. I hope their parents will allow them to watch this and absorb the lessons being taught.
