Wrote about this before. I guess the super-incisive voice of Geico has become a product liability. From Dave Weigel:
One of my readers called Douglas April 15th, and they exchanged words. Here’s the upshot:
Dr. Clouthier,
Saw your post on Lance Baxters phone call and message to Freedomworks this morning and it made my blood boil. Not so much his insinuation of mental retardation – that’s par for the course when dealing when leftists. What really infuriated me was the comment about violence – where do these people get off accusing anyone of violence when so far, deranged leftist biology professors who are “obsessed with Obama to the point of being off-putting” currently hold the lead with a body count of three – zero.
Anyway, gave Lance a call and got an answering machine. Left a message and said that I am a soldier, and I will always defend his right to speak. I will always defend Geicos right to have him speak for them. But at least for now, I also have the right to decide where to spend my money – and Geico will not see a penny of it, and will know that he is the reason why. I also made the above point regarding the woman in Huntsville.
Well, guess who called me back in high dudgeon? Lance. Yes, Lance wanted to tell me a few things.
First of all, it seems Freedomworks had no right to put his message online, and he wanted to know if I would like him to put mine online to (of all places) Huffpo? You see, the fact that my number turned up on his answering machine or caller i.d. is morally equivalent to his leaving his name and phone number on the recorder of Freedomworks (and they had no right to post it online). Further, Freedomworks is (and I am ) engaging in Fascist tactics in defiance of their platform (and my small government, anti fascist beliefs) by engaging in a “witch hunt” against him and “trying to get him fired.” Furthermore, he didn’t call anyone in Freedomworks “mentally retarded,” he was “just asking questions.”
I said that in the first place, I stand behind what I have to say, and what I have said. I won’t hide behind semantic games like that. In the second place, I asked what a system of government in which government controls the means of production has in common with a system in which Mike can, with his wallet, hold Lance accountable for his behavior and his employer accountable for having him as their spokesmen? Lance said that was “semantic games.”
Furthermore, being the voice of “The Geico Gecko” does not make him a public figure since he hasn’t worked for them in over two years.
How do these people ever get past the analogies section of the SATs? They seem to have no ability to discern like objects/concepts vs. unlike objects/concepts. Or perhaps that is just a convenient disorder.
Just thought I’d share this with you, and thank you for the work you do. I always read your stuff on RWN and really appreciate your commentary. Had to get this off my chest.
Best,
Mike McPherson
Seems that this guy is going to now sue Freedom Works. Why? For sharing his super-smart and incisive insights with the whole world? For sharing his personal information?
Really, he doesn’t seem to care too much if he’s calling readers back. He didn’t have to do that, right?
So whatever. Another doofus leftist reveals himself. And he doesn’t like for people seeing the real him.
