STAMFORD — A Stamford man jailed in October for allegedly burning a boy’s face with a propane grill lighter and whipping him with a spiked belt, was arrested again for allegedly calling the boy’s mother from jail.
Kevyn Orellana Garcia, 24, was charged with two counts each of harassment and violating a judge’s protective order. Judge Bruce Hudock ordered that he be held in lieu of a $25,000 cash bond. Before his arrest Friday, he was being held at the Bridgeport Correctional Center on an $80,000 court appearance bond.
Assistant State’s Attorney Susan Campbell said Garcia is under investigation for re-entering the United States after being deported a few years ago.
According to a three-page arrest affidavit in his court file, Garcia’s wife told police he has been trying to call her from jail, in violation of a judge’s protective order from September. Police checked out the allegation and found that Garcia’s call logs from Bridgeport Correctional Center showed that he made two calls to his wife’s number on Oct. 10 and 12 last year. He has since been blocked from calling her phone, the affidavit said.
Garcia’s wife also told police she has received calls from strangers telling her they have a message from Garcia, who wanted to know why she hasn’t been answering her calls. Garcia’s wife told police he has caused too much damage to her family, the affidavit said.
According to police, in late October he was charged with felony counts of first-degree assault and second-degree assault and two counts of risk of injury to a child. Youth Bureau Sgt. Joseph Kennedy said in mid-September an employee at a West Side elementary school noticed the boy had bruises. The 8-year-old first said that a circular mark came from a fall, but a Stamford Hospital worker said it was from a burn, Kennedy said.
The boy then told a police officer Garcia burned his left cheek with the grill lighter because he would not wake up when Garcia tried to get him up on the morning after his birthday, shortly before police got involved, Kennedy said.
He said after some children left his house following his birthday party, Garcia got angry at him and whipped him with a spiked belt because he and a friend were shouting in his room during the party, Kennedy said.
Kennedy said police photographed bruises over much of the boy’s body.
Monsters like this feel they own those they consider family. He has ruined this boy’s and his mother’s lives and they are terrified of him. Deporting him didn’t get rid of him – he just came back and they let him. He’s beaten that child half to death evidently. If I were this boy’s mom, I would find a way to take the child and disappear and get a new life somehow. This man is dangerous and unless he is locked up or dead, he will come after them. That’s the way he’s built. Protective orders mean nothing to him. Men like this only understand and respect violence. Normally, I would say fight, but to protect the child, I would tell her to leave and find somewhere else to start over if she can. If not, get a gun (if you can in Connecticut), a dog and a bad ass roommate.
