Muslim Parents in NJ: “We’re Going to be the Majority Soon” – Demand Holiday [Video]

Muslim parents in New Jersey turned out in force at a school board meeting demanding that the school declare a holiday and shut down the school system for Eid al-Adha, a sacred holiday for Muslims. The school board said no go… six days notice was not enough time to notify families so they could make arrangements for the care of their children etc. But I have no doubt that next year, this same board will have declared this a holiday where the schools will not be in session. They are already making moves to do so. Jewish holidays are not observed this way and the Jewish community has voiced a complaint on the dual standard here. In fact, most schools don’t even celebrate Christmas any more and they don’t let out for Good Friday. So, why the exception for Muslims? Seems preferential to me.

From TheBlaze:

The Jersey City Board of Education voted last week not to close schools for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, one of the most important holidays for Muslims.

School board members in New Jersey made their decision Thursday despite appeals from Muslim attendees who showed up to advocate that the board change the school schedule.

At one point, things became so heated that an official urged security to “take charge” of the situation. At least one person was seen on video being escorted from the meeting.

“We feel alienated from the Board of Education, we feel alienated from this system,” Omar Abouelkhair told WNBC-TV.

“We’re going to be the majority soon,” another said.

But board member Gerald Lyons suggested there is a perfectly valid reason for having school on Thursday, telling residents that closing school with just six days’ notice would cause “undue hardship” for 5,000 to 10,000 parents who might not have anywhere else to send their kids.

Lyons also reminded that students can still take the day off as an excused religious absence, meaning they would not face a penalty for doing so. Others noted that the school does not let out for the Jewish holidays Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

The controversy came in the first year that schools in New York City will not have classes Thursday, the result of a decision made by Mayor Bill de Blasio last March, WNBC reported.

Putting Islam above other religions in America is unconstitutional and un-American. One woman said that Muslims are the majority now, implying that they would control things there before long. I think there are a lot of parents in New Jersey that are going to take exception with that. Bet on it. De Blasio in New York seems to be shutting the schools down for every religion’s holy days except for Jews and Christians. That’s discrimination pure and simple as opposed to what just happened in New Jersey. I had no idea the Muslim population there was so large. I don’t see why the school should be shut down at all, given these students can get a day off as an excused religious absence. It’s not about religious observance, it’s about how they are making a point that special consideration should be given to Muslims. Parents better speak up or they are going to lose control of the schools to theocratic doctrine and fast in New Jersey.
