Republicans Show Independence in Response to State of Union

Republicans show Independence

Yesterday, the Republican Party chose Representative Joni Ernst (R-IA) to give the GOP response to the State of the union by President Barack Obama. Representative Ernst is and active military personal, Lieutenant Colonel in the Iowa National Guard and a newly elected U.S. Senator.

Senator came out powerful at hit home immediately. She stated that her goal was not to attack President Obama but have a normal conversation with the American people. I think the Republican Party did this to try to appear that they maybe able to work with President Obama so send in a much softer gentler person. They also did this since they know Hillary Clinton may run for President, Mrs. Clinton has not officially announced her intentions yet. This is a way to appear that the Republican Party supports women. It was also an attempt to show the Republican commitment to American military families. The speeches had a message of service to country, as opposed to service greater then service to ones self. Here the Republican Party may have been saying that President Obama is self-centered and is always campaigning. My readers can be the judge of that.

Senator Ernst was respectable even in disagreement. She even commended the President saying, “Even if we do not agree, it’s important to hear different points of view.” The goal of Senator Ernst was to have a conversation with the American people not to attack the President word for word or policy for policy in the speech. She mainly wanted to have a conversation on the goals that the new Republican Majority in Congress will put forth.

Joni opened up to the American public showing that the Republicans feel the pain that the people have been going through over the past six years of the Obama Administration with a dysfunctional government both in Congress and in the White House. She claimed, “We see our neighbors agonizing over stagnant wages and lost jobs. We see the hurt by canceled health care plans and higher monthly insurance bills.” Remember Democrats, Barack Obama said, “If you like your doctor you can keep your doctor, if you like your insurance you can keep your insurance.”

It was not long before the Senator gave a payback to big oil and showed how even Democrats disagree with Obama’s delay of the Keystone Pipeline. Senator Ernst claimed, “The President’s own State Department has said Keystone’s construction could support thousands of jobs and pump billions into our economy, and do it minimal environmental impact.” This was a way to show that Democrats and Republicans could work together for a shared goal of getting people back to work. Nevertheless, in the end it was also a payback to big oil.

Senator Ernst also reached out to union members. She talked about boosting manufacturing right here at home. She may know that days of unions are now dwindling in size and would like to show them that she sympathizes with their issues. Selling that message is another issue all together.

On terrorism, she connected with people. She talked about recent terrorist attacks in France and Nigeria.

Lastly, Senator Ernst tried to connect with the common folks. She talked about making the tax code simpler for the middle class and not the super rich. Senator Earnest claimed, “Republicans think tax filing should be easier for you, not just the well connected.

I feel this speech-hit home with many people. It was a much simpler and down to earth message. The reason why the Republicans chose her to give the Republican response was to try and reach out to women voters and show that Republicans share some of their values. It is an attempt to show that Hillary Clinton does not represent all women.
